In 2016, Dr Richard Arm founded the Flexural Composites Research Laboratory in the School of Art and Design, leading on several funded, bio-synthesis projects for the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and the NHS. In 2017, he received a fellowship with the Royal Society of the Arts and the ‘Transforming Surgical Education’ award, presented by the Royal College of Surgeons, for the thoracic trauma trainer manikin he developed, the same year.
Since 2018, Richard has been a Senior Research Fellow, he has authored many peer reviewed scientific and medical journal papers, holds three patents, has licenced his designs for manufacturing in the UK- generating over £1 million revenue, and has appeared on three international magazine covers, over 100 newspapers, and appeared on TV and radio several times to talk about his research.
Richard has lectured at over twenty public venues around the world from Europe and Asia, to Africa and North America, and has exhibited his work at the Design Museum and the Saatchi gallery, London, and the Natural history museum in Australia. Most recently, Richard published a book chapter in the 3rd edition of 'Medical Modelling' and appeared on popular children's medical educational show, 'Operation Ouch' (season 13, episode 2) for the BBC.
